In September 2008, I was made an offer I couldn't refuse. A company (Home base Support) which does welfare work for Dutch soldiers on their tour of duty commisioned me to do a few illustrations and an animation. As part of the deal they offered me to head down to Afghanistan, to camp Kandahar (KAF) and "Camp Holland" in Tarin Kowt to gather inspiration for the assignment. Being a curious civilian I immediately said yes, realizing what a rare oppertunity this was. The outcome of the photos have little to do with the outcome of my assignment, they are simply a documentary report about what daily life is like on both camps. I came in unprepared and left with tonnes of new experiences and relitavations, as can also be read on my blog.
